Julia Y. Edwards
Julia Y. Edwards has been studying movement in various forms her entire life. Her interests and teaching endeavors are described separately on this website for clarity, but her investigations inform, inspire and converse with each other every day.
Julia is a dancer, choreographer and movement educator originally from Virginia and North Carolina. She has studied, taught, performed and choreographed throughout NC, SC, OH and NYC. She attended the University of North Carolina School for the Arts for Contemporary Dance in NC, holds a B.S. in Sociology from the College of Charleston, SC, a comprehensive Pilates certification from PraXis Balanced Body Studio and an M.F.A. in Choreography from UNC-Greensboro. In 2016 she relocated to southeast Wisconsin from Brooklyn, NY. She currently resides in Madison, WI.
While living in New York City, Julia created contemporary works as a freelance choreographer, owned and operated a Pilates studio and taught Pilates at ABT’s Jackie Kennedy Onassis School for Pre-Professional Dancers.
Currently, Julia explores movement in several avenues. She offers individual and group Pilates classes to a wide variety of populations. She teaches multiple forms of dance including modern, ballet and tap. She is not currently performing and after choreographing since 2000 she is re-examining her relationship to creating dance works, though she always loves choreographing with or for students.
Julia enjoys sharing and exploring all movements with all people. Movement never ceases to challenge, inform and enthrall her. She finds movement allows us to know and share ourselves more deeply. Movement is a tool, an empowering experience and an educator.
